The first step to scoring better in IELTS is to understand the format of the test. IELTS test consists of four sections - Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking.

The reading and writing sections are different for both the academic and general versions of the test. The sections of listening and speaking are same in both the versions.

Good reading speed is required in this section. Also, you should practice the reading test by downloading the IELTS tests available online.

  • Writing Section

The writing section of the test also demands a strong vocabulary. Again, you need to practice the writing test to improve your writing skills and grammar.

  • Listening Test

The listing test consists of 40 questions divided into four sections. Candidates are required to listen to the audio carefully as they get only one chance to listen to each section.

The questions are provided towards the end of each section which the candidates need to answer. The total time to complete the listening test is 30 minutes.

  • Speaking Test

The speaking test is an oral test that consists of three sections which are to be completed within 11 to 14 minutes of time. The first section is an interview session in which the candidate is asked to introduce himself/herself and questions are asked by the interviewer.

In the second section, the candidate is provided a topic to speak on and one minute time is given for preparation. In the third section, a conversation is held between the candidate and the examiner that is related to the topic given in the second section.

  • Pay attention to Grammar

Grammar is equally important in the preparation of IELTS. Although there is no grammar section in the IELTS and questions are not asked directly on grammar, it is used in answering the questions in all the four sections. Grammar decides the correctness of your answers.
